Assistant GM - Barber/Stylist Leader
Assistant General Manager – Barber / Stylist Leader
Scissors & Scotch is a barbershop and bar. It’s upscale but not uptight. S&S caters to clients from all walks of life looking for an amazing haircut plus that “Cheers” experience where everyone knows their name.
This is a growth leadership role. You’ll still be behind the chair doing what you love (about 32 hours a week cutting), but you’re also the person we lean on to run the shop when the General Manager isn’t there. If you’re a great barber or stylist who’s ready to lead, build a team, and grow into bigger things, keep reading. If you just want to cut and clock out, that’s totally fine, but this isn’t the role for you.
These are the requirements for this position:
- You’re a good person
- We live by our Core Principles. The first one is Do The Right Thing. It’s simple but it weeds out jerks. We don’t want jerks and neither should you. If you’re a jerk, don’t apply.
- You can actually cut hair
- This is a barber/stylist role first. You’ll spend the bulk of your week (around 32 hours) behind the chair, licensed and doing great work. Leadership is on top of that, not instead of it.
- You want to lead, not just be the boss
- You’ll be the leader in the room when the GM is out. That means owning the culture, keeping standards high, and making calls in the moment. People should be glad you’re the one running the floor, not counting down until the GM is back.
- You LOVE meeting, talking to, and connecting with people
- Your clients love you and so does the team. The more you make people feel special, solve problems, and set the tone, the better this whole shop runs.
- You can work a computer better than your parents
- Scheduling, inventory, our POS, team communication. If opening the browser requires you to ask for help, this isn’t a great fit.
- You want to work in an upscale environment
- This is not the place to wear pajama bottoms to work. We deal with successful and awesome clients. Our team is also successful and awesome. There is no room for sloppiness, laziness, or showing up to work in last night’s dirty clothes.
- You want to grow personally
- This is the launch pad, not the ceiling. AGM is where you sharpen your leadership, learn the business side, and set yourself up for General Manager and beyond. Our goal is to make you far more skilled and marketable for wherever life takes you. And if you want to build a long career here? Even better.
- You like winning
- This is not a job mindlessly cutting chicken in the back of a restaurant. Only successful shops can create real growth opportunities for their people. So we set goals, celebrate wins, and actually enjoy working toward something. No airpods, no hiding in the back of house.
What You’ll Own as AGM
- Being the leader in the shop whenever the GM isn’t: this position will often require evenings, weekend days, and the busy stretches
- Cutting hair as your primary role (about 32 hours a week behind the chair)
- Assisting the GM with daily operations: scheduling, training, and oversight of the team
- Keeping the shop clean, stocked, and looking sharp, including product inventory and presentation
- Driving culture: planning and running the team activities that make this a place people want to work
- Being the liaison between the team and management: hearing concerns, solving what you can, and escalating what you can’t
- Making sure every client walks out happy through active leadership and quick problem-solving
- 2 to 5 hours a week of managerial/admin work on top of your cutting hours
Ideal Experience
You’ll need to be a licensed barber or cosmetologist. Experience in one or more of the following is a plus:
- Leading or supervising a team
- High-end barbershop or salon
- Luxury hospitality or service
- Training or mentoring other stylists/barbers
- Membership-based or upscale service businesses
- Managing schedules, inventory, or shop operations
How It Works
- Full-time role, minimum 36 hours per week (about 32 cutting, 2 to 5 on leadership/admin)
- Your schedule is built to guarantee leadership coverage when the GM is out
- Selection is through a panel interview with shop leadership
- New AGMs get hands-on manager training in the first month, with ongoing coaching along your growth path
- The role is reviewed once a year so you can keep growing, or step down amicably if it’s not the right fit anymore
